Shuumi
Shuumi is a voluntary land-tax for non-Indigenous people living in the territory of the Lisjan, Ohlone people (S.F. East Bay). Sogorea Te’ is “an urban Indigenous women-led land trust that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people.” Shuumi supports the work of Sogorea Te’ and is “a small step towards acknowledging the history of genocide on this land and contributing to its healing.” Please visit https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/ for more information.
I pay my individual Shuumi on a yearly basis, using the calculator offered on Sogorea Te’s website: https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/pay-the-shuumi-land-tax/. I organized with Jews on Ohlone Land towards the goal of 100% Jewish individual and institutional participation in Shuumi. As someone who lives and works on stolen Indigenous land, I am working to figure out how much of my earnings to tithe (Jewish donation) to Shuumi in addition the yearly land-tax.
If you live or work on Lisjan, Ohlone land consider paying Shuumi and encouraging your place of employment to pay institutional Shuumi as well.
